I’ve only been free for 143 days since I was fifteen. That might sound wild, but during my time inside, I refused to let that define me. I earned over 70 certificates, taught finance, self-awareness, and job readiness classes, led a horticulture team growing crops and ornamental houseplants, and even had my writing published. I also participated in four documentaries. Now, after two decades, I’m finally in the process of being resentenced and I’ll be coming home soon. This is a big deal for me. I’m excited to get out, but I’ll be honest, I’m also nervous. I’ve never had a cellphone, car, or my own place. I’ve grown a lot, but there’s still many things I haven’t experienced. I don’t have children and only had one long-term relationship during my incarceration, but that ended a few years ago. I mention this because I was counting on her to help me transition, but now I’m learning how to stand on my own. I do have goals and passions, and I’m ready to build a new life, but I know I’ll need good people around me. That’s why I’m here. I’m trying to find connections with people who are kind, caring, and willing to support me as I learn how to live free. I’m not looking for romance, just strong friendships and mentors who believe in growth and second chances.
